Blue Raiders drop 8-4 decision to Memphis

Allen belts fourth homer of the season

MURFREESBORO - Jared Allen belted his fourth home run of the season giving Middle Tennessee the early edge, but Memphis used a five-run fourth inning to down the Blue Raiders 8-4 on Wednesday at Reese Smith Jr. Field. 

MT (13-15) took an early 2-0 lead from Allen's homer in the first . However, the Tigers (17-12) belted five runs in the fifth to take control of the game. The Blue Raiders posted a line score of four runs on six hits with two errors. UM managed eight runs on eight hits.

Allen led the Blue Raiders with a 1-for-3 performance, driving in two runs, recording two RBI and tying for a team-leading fourth home run. Dustin Delgado reached on base twice by virtue of walks. 

Nathan Foriest (0-4) took the loss giving up four runs, three earned, on two hits in three innings tossed. Memphis right-hander Dylan Toscano (3-1) claimed the win with four runs allowed on four hits in six innings thrown.

MT jumped on the board first with a two-run homer off the bat of Allen. The long bomb was Allen's fourth of the season. UM started their threat in the fourth inning with a single and a walk. Keaton Aldridge reached on base with a fielding error, scoring the Tigers' first run. Memphis would score four more runs on the combinations of a walk, ground out, wild pitch and sacrifice fly to take a 5-2 lead. Zac Schrienthal's RBI single extended Memphis' edge to four in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Stephens recorded his first triple of the year allowing Allen to score. Stephens crossed home plate off a wild pitch to give the Raiders' fourth run of the evening. Memphis posted runs in the seventh and ninth to build a four-run cushion.

Lincoln County's Caleb Smith worked three innings of relief, giving up an earned run with a pair of strikeouts and walks. Will Small, Brent Stockstill, Garrett Ring and Cody Tollison closed out the final three innings with two runs on three hits.

Middle Tennessee opens a three-game series at Southern Miss on Friday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Hattiesburg.

NOTES: Jared Allen recorded his fourth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead, with a launch to left field in the first inning ... Schnure's walk in the fifth was his first time he reached on base in a Blue Raider uniform ... Ryan Stephens inked his first triple this season and his seventh of his career ... Schnure later recorded his first career hit in the seventh ... Trent Miller collected his 54th career double in the eighth.
