Softball drops doubleheader to Marshall, 9-8 and 10-6

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee (7-31, 2-11 C-USA) dropped two games Saturday to Conference USA foe Marshall (14-23, 5-6 C-USA), 9-8 and 10-6.
Kayla Toney led the Blue Raiders offensively, finishing 3-for-8 with four RBI and a home run. LaRi Mitchell tallied three hits (3-for-9) with an RBI through the two games, while junior Laura Dukes finished as the only other Blue Raider to manage multiple hits (2-for-6). Cheyenne Willis finished 1-for-4 in the two contests with an RBI, but reached base safely four more times with two walks and two hit by pitches.
In the first contest, MT jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Herd tied the score at 2-all in the second. Each side went scoreless in the third and Marshall took the lead by putting two runs across in the fourth.
MT produced its largest inning of the doubleheader in the fourth, scoring five runs in response to the Herd's two. The Blue Raiders loaded the bases and LaRi Mitchell plated one run on a RBI single to the third baseman. Two batters later Kayla Toney cleared the bases on a hit to center. For the final run of the inning, Toney scored on an illegal pitch call on the Herd pitcher and helped MT to the 7-4 lead.
In a back-and-forth matchup, Marshall responded by plating four runs in the top of the fifth to recapture the lead. MT added one run in the bottom half before the Herd scored one to take the 9-8 win over MT in game one.
Jordyn Fisherback (3-10) received the loss after tossing the final two and two-thirds innings, while allowing the deciding one run to the Herd on four hits. Caitlin McClure received the start and pitched the first three and one-third innings, while allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts.
In the second contest of the double-dip, MT again scored first, tallying three runs in the first inning. Samantha Nieves tallied her second home run of the season on a line drive shot down the right field line. Toney reached base on a bunt single and scored on a double down the left field line by Dukes. Nina Dever added the second double of the inning, plating Dukes for the Blue Raiders' third run in the first.
A scoreless second and a single run by Marshall in the third put the score at 3-1 Middle Tennessee. The Herd scored two runs to tie the score at 3-all before MT added another three runs to recapture the lead and put the score at 6-3. Marshall's offensive continued to score, plating runs in the last three innings with three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 10-4 final.
Fisherback (3-11) earned the loss in the second game, tossing the first four innings against the Herd. Shelby Stinnett pitched in relief of Fisherback and allowed seven hits on three earned runs, while McClure tossed the final one and one-third inning.
Middle Tennessee and Charlotte conclude the three-game series with a single game tomorrow at 12 p.m.
