MT and APSU set for battle in Clarksville

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee (7-32) treks to Clarksville, Tenn., April 9 for a single game against in-state foe Austin Peay (17-21) at Cheryl Holt Field with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
The Blue Raiders are coming off a three-game sweep by Conference USA foe Marshall April 5-6 and are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. Against the Herd April 5, MT dropped the first contest 9-8 before losing the second game of the double-dip 10-6.
In the final game Sunday, Marshall scored three runs in the third to possess a 6-1 lead through three innings. Each side went scoreless in the fourth and both tallied one run in the fifth. After another single run by the Herd in the seventh, freshman Marinna Shadley tallied her first career home run, slapping a two-run homer over the right field fence.
Kayla Toney led the Blue Raiders during the weekend, tallying a .417 batting average with one double, one home run and four RBI. Laura Dukes finished with a .333 average, while LaRi Mitchell rounded out a group of three Blue Raiders with a .300 average or higher, hitting .308. Cheyenne Willis and Dukes each were hit by pitches three different occasions. Willis also hit her first home run in a Blue Raider uniform, while Toney and Samantha Nieves each added a blast of their own.
Austin Peay is 17-21 on the season and 1-4 in its last five games, winning the second game of a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech 6-3 Sunday in Clarksville. The Lady Govs are also in the middle of an eight-game home stand and will play a three-game series against Murray State April 12-13.
Lauren de Castro boasts a team-best .412 batting average with 64 total bases, while starting 36 games for APSU. As a team, the Lady Govs hit .230 and are 15-for-20 on stolen base attempts this season. Four members of the APSU squad have started all 38 games, with Mel Pavel and Laurel Burroughs both tying for a team-high 113 at bats with Pavel notching 19 RBI. De Castro leads APSU with 24 RBI, while Kayla Davidson is second on the team with 20 RBI.
De Castro is also the Austin Peay ace and has an 11-8 record with 109 innings pitched and 79 strikeouts. Sidney Hooper (3-5), Brianna Baruccio (2-7) and Taylor Mills (1-0) each have tallied a win inside the circle for APSU, while Hooper is second on the team with 48 innings pitched.
