MT sweeps Delta Devils with 11-2 victory

Frebis throws six scoreless innings in win

MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee's Johnathan Frebis pitched six shutout innings in the Blue Raiders' 11-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Sunday to sweep the weekend series at Reese Smith Jr. Field.

The Blue Raiders (18-18) managed four-run bursts in the first and fifth innings to take a commanding lead over the Delta Devils (1-28). The Raiders inked 11 runs on 18 hits with one error. MVSU scored both of their runs in the ninth, stringing together eight hits with an error during the game.

Frebis (3-3) allowed four hits, striking out four and walking two in six innings of work. Kooper Kessler and Brent Stockstill combined for two scoreless innings. Senior Jonathan Sisco allowed two Delta Devil runs in the ninth off of two hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks. MVSU starter Connor Sheppeard (1-8) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight earned runs on 11 hits in five innings pitched.

The entire starting lineup for the Raiders reached on base in the contest and five players managed multi-hit affairs. 1B Trent Miller went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and RBI. Miller's two doubles moved him to sole possession for fourth all-time at MT. Jake Ingold collected two singles with a game-best three RBI and a run scored. Hank LaRue doubled, homered and singled in the game, finishing 3-for-5. Ryan Stephens and Austin Bryant each managed two hits with two runs scored.

Middle Tennessee got things started when Miller doubled to right field, scoring LaRue. Stephens hit a double during the next at bat to stretch the lead. Ingold hit a two-out single to score Stephens and Allen to give MT four runs in the first.

In the fifth, MT added another four run effort with runs scored from Stephens, Ingold, Bryant and Trevor Haggard. LaRue blasted his second home run of the year with a leadoff bomb to right field.

The Raiders worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh with Kessler forcing a fly out. Bryant and Caleb Smith scored in the seventh and eighth innings to extend MT's lead to 11. MVSU scored two runs in the ninth to break up the shutout. Leadoff hitter Arrington Smith led the Delta Devils with a 2-for-5 contest.

On Tuesday, the Blue Raiders open a five-game road swing with a midweek contest at No. 11 Vanderbilt. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Hawkins Field in Nashville.

NOTES: Trent Miller moved into sole possession with his two doubles for 59 in his career, three shy of reaching the school's top-3 list ... Aaron Aucker made his first career appearance at third base ... Caleb Smith made his first appearance at the plate in the eighth inning ... Smith's triple was the fourth of the weekend for the Blue Raiders ... Johnathan Frebis recorded his second shutout performance of the year, his first since starting against Charlotte on March 15.
