Raiders knock off FAU to advance in C-USA Championship

MT plays No. 8-seed UTSA in 1 p.m. contest on Thursday

NORFOLK, Va. - No. 9-seed Middle Tennessee picked up a 4-1 victory over No. 16-seed Florida Atlantic in the first round of the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Old Dominion University.

The Blue Raiders (11-9) won their second match over the Owls (10-11) this season, picking up four of the six singles victories. MT takes on No. 8-seed UTSA in a 1 p.m. second round contest on Thursday.

Junior Nayara Moraes moved into a tie for sixth all-time with Michelle Girle (1986) with her 66th career victory on Wednesday. Moraes won 6-2, 6-3 over Catalina Ene to pick up MT's first win. Jesse Grace followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Stephanie Cardullo.

The Owls took their lone point when Lyndsey Boos knocked off Irina Constantinide, 7-5, 6-2. Tiffany William earned her 16th singles win, knocking off Kandis Legall (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) in three sets. Flavia Nagayama secured the match with her 6-1, 6-2 straight-set sweep over the Owls' Natalia Tomaszewicz.

"I'm really proud of the way we came out and competed today," said head coach Shelley Godwin. "The first match of the tournament always involves a few nerves and I thought we did a good job of managing ourselves especially since we started the match with singles."

Middle Tennessee takes on the UTSA Roadrunners for the third time in program history on Thursday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action live online at GoBlueRaiders.com.
