UTC scores four in the sixth to take 5-3 win over MT

Blue Raiders leave 11 on base

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee (7-39) loaded the bases in the sixth but failed to score, while Chattanooga (26-17) capitalized on its opportunity in the bottom half, scoring four runs to net the 5-3 victory over MT Saturday at the Jim Frost Stadium.

Middle Tennessee was led offensively by Samantha Nieves and Nina Dever, who both finished 2-for-4 in the second game of the series with Chattanooga. Nieves notched one of the team's two RBI in the third inning on a single to right field, while freshman Austyn Whaley went 1-for-3 with a RBI single in the fourth. LaRi Mitchell tallied a single in the third inning to extend her hitting streak to 15 games. As a team, UTC outhit MT 8-7 but committed five errors to the Blue Raiders three.

With Middle Tennessee holding three-run advantage through three and half inning, the Lady Mocs stayed persistent and netted their first run in the fourth. Middle Tennessee then stranded two runners in the fifth and proceeded to load the bases in the sixth to no avail.

UTC responded with momentum on its side by loading the bases after a walk and two MT errors. The Lady Mocs pushed four runs across the plate on three hits and one walk to take the 5-3 advantage.

Caitlin McClure (2-12) tossed a six-inning complete game against the Mocs, allowing five runs with no earned with one strikeout. For Chattanooga, Taylor Deason tossed the first three innings while allowing three runs with one earned. Reliever Katie Henderson (14-8) finished with four innings pitched with no earned runs, while working her way out of a bases loaded jam twice. 

Middle Tennessee continues play at UT Martin April 22 with a 4 p.m. slated start.
