Sprint medley breaks 32-year old school record

Men's 4x200, 4x400 to compete in finals Saturday

Philadelphia - The Middle Tennessee track & field teams finished the second day of the 120th Penn Relays by advancing two relay teams to the finals and breaking a 32-year school record in the men's sprint medley.

The men's sprint medley team of Demitrius Shelton, Tahir Walsh, Eliud Rutto and Emmanuel Tugumisirize raced to a fourth place finish with a time of 3:18.72, setting a new MT outdoor record. The previous-best time of 3:20.68 was achieved in 1982.

The men's 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter teams each placed in the top eight, advancing to the finals tomorrow. The 4x200 squad of Walsh, Shelton, Tugumisirize and Andre Hamilton finished sixth (1:23.77), while the 4x400 team of Hamilton, Rutto, Tugumisirize and Steven Palmer also placed sixth (3:07.79).

India Hammond was the lone MT field athlete to capture a top-five finish, placing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.89-meters. Hammond added an 11th place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 12.40-meters. Lucy Kapkiai completed her first 5,000-meter of the outdoor season, finishing 16th with a time of 17:17.72.

The men's 4x200 final is scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. (EST) start, while the 4x400 is slated for a 6 p.m. (EST) start. Cordairo Golden will compete in the triple jump tomorrow, which starts at 2 p.m.
