MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senior Zac Curtis tossed a three-hit shutout and junior Jared Allen provided the offense with a solo homer as the Middle Tennessee baseball team downed Old Dominion 1-0 Friday night at Reese Smith, Jr. Field. In the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 21-21 and 10-9 in Conference USA, while the Monarchs fall to 25-17 and 12-10 in C-USA.
Curtis' gem was his first career complete-game shutout, matching a career-high with 11 strikeouts while walking none. The senior left-hander faced just two over the minimum in the ballgame.
Allen scored the game's only run when he put the Blue Raiders on the board in the bottom of the second, driving the first pitch of the inning just over the outstretched glove of Old Dominion left fielder Nick Walker and out of the ballpark for a 1-0 lead. The homer put Allen in sole possession of the C-USA home run lead with eight.
Old Dominion left-hander Andy Roberts was saddled with a tough-luck loss, surrendering a run on four hits over seven-plus innings, while working out of trouble caused by four Monarch errors. Designated hitter Brett Harris pitched the final inning in relief.
The game was completed in one hour and 52 minutes, marking the quickest contest of the year for the Blue Raiders.
The Blue Raiders and Monarchs square off again Saturday with a 4 p.m. first pitch. RHP Paul Mittura (3-2, 3.08 ERA) will go for MT, opposed by LHP Ryan Yarbrough (5-4, 2.69 ERA).
