MT to host final weekend series against FAU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team (10-42, 2-18 C-USA) plays host to Florida Atlantic (30-21, 12-9 C-USA) for a three-game Conference USA series at the Blue Raider Softball Field May 3-4.

Saturday will feature a doubleheader with a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday's contest will be the final game of the season with a noon start. The doubleheader Saturday features Alumni Appreciation Day, inviting all former Blue Raider softball players to attend the final home stand to be recognized for their contributions to Middle Tennessee softball. Before the final contest Sunday, Middle Tennessee will hold a Senior Day celebration to honor the 2014 senior class.

The Blue Raiders are fresh off a two-game sweep of Belmont May 1, beating the Bruins 3-1 in nine innings and 4-3 in eight innings. Senior Shelby Stinnett tossed a career-high nine innings in the first game, while Caitlin McClure also notched a career-high eight-inning performance in the second contest.

Laura Dukes finished 3-for-7 and was one of four Blue Raiders to tally multiple hits in the series with Belmont. Dukes improved her team-leading batting average to .371 and has also tallied a .529 average in the 12 games played in Murfreesboro. Freshman Austyn Whaley recorded four walks in the two games against the Bruins and elevated her season totals to 30, tying her with Muriel Ledbetter for second in the Middle Tennessee record books for a single-season.

Florida Atlantic travels to Murfreesboro with a 30-21 overall record and a 12-9 record in C-USA play. The Owls are currently slated for the sixth seed in the C-USA tournament and are 6-4 in their last ten games, which includes a three-game sweep of UTEP April 18-19.

FAU's strength is its pitching staff, which boasts a team ERA of 1.88 and is led by Samantha Messer. Messer tallies a 14-7 record in 25 appearances with a 1.56 ERA. Kylee Hanson (8-9) and Amanda Wilson (8-4) are the other two FAU pitchers to record wins in 2014, while Hanson leads the team with 90 strikeouts.

As a team, Florida Atlantic has a .259 batting average and is led by Christian Martinez's .364 average. Martinez also has a team high 59 hits with five triples and 75 total bases. Jordan Stovall has notched a team-leading 28 RBI and is one of three to have amassed 20 RBI or greater.
