Track & field advance 12 to tomorrow's finals

MT women's team ranks seventh with 17.50 points

HOUSTON - The Middle Tennessee track & field teams qualified 12 for tomorrow's finals, while earning points in the women's high jump, long jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase on the third day of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships Saturday.

Rhema Cheruiyot led the Blue Raiders with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, earning six team points with her school-record setting 10:48.55 performance. Barbara Vilson added a fourth-place tie in the women's high jump, clearing 1.71-meters for four and half points. India Hammond preceded Vilson's efforts with a sixth-place finish in the long jump. Hammond added three points to the women's totals with her 6.04-meter leap.

After three days, the MT women's team is seventh in team points with 17.50. Only three and half points separate the Blue Raiders from fourth place, where Tulsa is ranked with 22 points.

Among those who qualified for tomorrow's finals, Hammond advanced to the 100-meter hurdles final with a personal-best 13.82, but was narrowly edged by teammate Christal Wilson, who also set a career-best time of 13.81 for seventh place.

The duo of Tressanique Hampton and Rachel Islam also notched career-best times in the 800-meter, while qualifying for the finals. Hampton placed fourth with a time of 2:10.75 and Islam added a sixth-place finish with her time of 2:12.01.

Shaina Johnson registered an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter with a career-best 55.03 seconds to round out the MT women's athletes that advanced to tomorrow's finals.

For the men's team, Eliud Rutto placed first in the 800-meter preliminaries (1:51.74) and second in the 1,500-meter (3:51.68). Joining Rutto in the 1,500 will be Hillary Rono, who finished 10th with a time of 3:53.51 seconds.

Junior Cadet added two top-eight finishes with career-best times to advance to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles (13.96) and the 400-meter hurdles (52.38).

Emmauel Tugumisirze and Tahir Walsh qualified for the finals in the 400-meter and 200-meter, respectively. Tugumisirize placed second with a time of 47.36 seconds, while Walsh finished fourth with a personal-best 21.07.

Tomorrow's field events start with the men's triple jump at 2:30 p.m., while the men's 4x100-meter relays starts the track events at 4:30 p.m.
