ST. LOUIS - Freshman Samantha Gotcher of the Middle Tennessee women's golf team qualified Tuesday afternoon for the 2014 U.S. Women's Open, becoming the second Blue Raider in program history to qualify for the tournament.

Gotcher is the second MT golfer to make the U.S. Women's Open tournament field. Taryn Durham (2004-08) became the first Blue Raider to qualify for the tournament in 2007 during sectional qualifying.

Gotcher qualified at the Lake Forest Golf and Country Club in St. Louis. The Clarksville, Tenn., native recorded a score of 148 through two rounds to make the cut as an amateur. The Lake Forest Golf and Country Club was one of 24 qualifying sites, including four international sites. The 2014 U.S. Women's Open Sectional Qualifying began May 5 and runs through May 30.

This season, the freshman was third on the team for Middle Tennessee, posting a scoring average of 76.4 through 15 rounds in the fall. Gotcher missed the Blue Raiders' spring season due to a back injury.

"Samantha (Gotcher) has worked very hard to come back from her back injury, where she was out all spring," said MT head coach Chris Adams. "Having not played in a competitive round since the Blue Raider Classic in October, this is a great accomplishment for her and will give her some confidence for the summer. She is very excited and deserving. I know she will go to Pinehurst and compete hard."

The 2014 U.S. Women's Open is June 14-22 in Pinehurst, N.C., at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. The Blue Raiders competed at the Pinehurst Invitational May 15-16, while Gotcher was recovering from her injury.
