Track & field heads to NCAA East Preliminary round

Blue Raiders to compete in Jacksonville, Florida

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's and women's track & field teams will travel to Jacksonville, Florida May 29-31 for the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary held at Hodges Stadium on the campus of North Florida. The meet is one of two that will make up the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship field with the championship taking placing in Eugene, Oregon June 11-14.

Eight Blue Raiders and the men's 4x400-meter team are slated to compete in the preliminary round this weekend, while Junior Cadet and India Hammond each are scheduled to compete in two events. Cadet will be the first Blue Raider to run Thursday, racing in the 400-meter hurdles at 3:30 p.m. Hammond will make her first attempt at reaching the championships in the long jump at 5:30 p.m.

Joining Hammond and Cadet on the first day are Emmanuel Tugumisirze and Eliud Rutto. Tugumisirize is slated to contend in the 400-meter, while Rutto will do the same in the 800-meter. All four events Thursday are the first round of competition, while Friday features the quarterfinals for the 400, 800 and 400-meter hurdles.

In addition to the quarterfinals Friday are the men's triple jump, 200-meter and 110-meter hurdles first rounds. Cordairo Golden and Vincent Okot each are scheduled to compete in the triple jump, which has a 4 p.m. start. Cadet will take part in his second event, the 110-meter hurdles, at 4 p.m., before the 400-meter hurdle quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Tahir Walsh is the final Blue Raider that will compete Friday, running in the 200-meter dash.

On Saturday, Hammond is slated to compete in the triple jump at 4 p.m. The 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash quarterfinals are also scheduled Saturday, while the men's 4x400-meter quarterfinals are the last event Middle Tennessee will race in at the preliminary competition.
