Duo qualifies for quarterfinals at NCAA East Preliminary

Rutto wins 800-meter heat

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Eliud Rutto and Emmanuel Tugumisirize qualified for tomorrow's quarterfinals, highlighting the Middle Tennessee performances on the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary round in Jacksonville, Florida at Hodges Stadium Thursday.

Rutto won his heat in the 800-meter with a time of 1:48.462, while finishing sixth overall in the first round of competition. Tugumisirize finished seventh overall in the 400-meter and second in his heat with a time of 45.97, his second-fastest time of the season. Tugumisirize is slated to run in the 400 quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m., while Rutto is scheduled in the 800 quarterfinals at 6 p.m.

Junior Cadet ran in the first event of the day, the men's 400-meter hurdles, finishing 38th overall and seventh in his heat with a time of 52.86 seconds. Cadet did not qualify for the 400 hurdle quarterfinals but will race in the 110-meter hurdles at 4 p.m. Friday.

India Hammond was the last Blue Raider in competition Thursday, finishing with a leap of 5.86-meters in the long jump. Like Cadet, Hammond did not qualify for the next round in the long jump but will compete in the triple jump Saturday at 4 p.m.

Joining the runners that qualified for Friday's quarterfinals is Tahir Walsh, who will run in the 200-meter dash first round at 7 p.m. Friday.
