Golden, Rutto and Tugumisrize advance to NCAA Championships

MT concludes preliminary competition Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A trio of Blue Raiders qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon Friday at Hodges Stadium on the second day of the NCAA East Preliminary round.

"We have had a good meet so far," said head coach Dean Hayes. "Everyone has competed well and I am satisfied with what we have done."

Emmanuel Tugumisirize finished fifth in his heat and tallied the seventh fastest time overall in the 400-meter with his personal-best time of 45.69 seconds. Tugumisirize eclipsed his previous-best of 45.83, which he set at the 2013 NCAA East Regional.

Cordairo Golden also notched a personal-best in the triple jump, leaping 16.12-meters on his second attempt, winning his flight and placing second overall. Golden's leap surpassed his 15.95-meter jump at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Also competing in the triple jump for Middle Tennessee was Vincent Okot, who finished 23rd overall (15.19m).

Eliud Rutto was the last Blue Raider to advance to Oregon, finishing second in the 800-meter with a time of 1:47.19. Rutto came into the preliminary rounds second in the NCAA behind Brandon McBride, who captured first (1:46.80).

Tahir Walsh and Junior Cadet both did not qualify for Saturday's quarterfinals in the 200-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles, respectively. Walsh finished 45th overall with his time of 22.20 second, while Cadet missed qualifying on a foul on the final hurdle.

The team of Andrea Hamilton, Steven Palmer, Rutto and Tugumsirize is scheduled to compete Saturday in the men's 4x400-meter relay, while India Hammond and Pershawna Williams are slated to contend in the women's triple jump to conclude competition at the NCAA East Preliminary.
