Trio heads to Oregon for NCAA Championships

Rutto boasts NCAA second-best 800-meter time

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Eliud Rutto, Emmanuel Tugumisirize and Cordairo Golden will represent Middle Tennessee at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon at the Hayward Field Wednesday through Saturday.

The trio of Blue Raiders head to the championship all ranked in the top-15 in their respective events. Rutto tops the list of Middle Tennessee athletes with his NCAA second-best outdoor time in the 800-meter. He notched a personal-best and Middle Tennessee record 1:45.37 in the 800 at the Payton Jordan Invitational and has won four 800-meter events this season, including the Conference USA individual title. Rutto is slated to compete in the semifinals of the 800 Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. with eight runners advancing to the finals Friday.

Joining Rutto on the track is Tugumisirize, who qualified for the 400-meter with a personal-best 45.69 second time at the NCAA East Preliminary round. Tugumisirize tallied the 14th-fastest time in the NCAA at the preliminaries and is scheduled to race in the semifinal round at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Golden is the final athlete representing MT, competing in the triple jump on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. start. He has won the triple jump twice this season and finished second at the C-USA Championships and the NCAA East Preliminary round. Golden tallied a personal-best 16.12-meters in the preliminary round and ranks seventh in the NCAA.
