EUGENE, Ore. - Cordairo Golden finished a stellar career at Middle Tennessee with a third-place finish in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Hayward Field, helping the MT men's squad finish tied for 24th in the team rankings.
The Memphis, Tennessee native fouled on his first two attempts before registering his career-best 16.32-meter leap in the third round, qualifying him for the finals and ranking him second behind Florida's Marquis Dendy after the first two trial flights. With five rounds completed, Golden ranked behind Dendy's title-winning 17.05-meter jump before Kansas State's Devin Field vaulted 16.46 meters to capture second.
"He (Golden) has always worked hard and it has paid off for him in the end," said head coach Dean Hayes. "He works continuously to improve and has done this all on a bad foot. It is a great way to go out with a personal best in the last meet of his career."
Golden's third-place finish is the highest of his career at the NCAA meet, eclipsing his previous-best fourth-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He also tallied his fourth All-American honor and his third first-team distinction, which includes two-consecutive outdoor seasons and the 2013-14 indoor season, where he finished sixth overall in the triple jump.
"They (Eliud Rutto, Emmanul Tugumisirize and Golden) did a great job," Hayes stated. "They are a great group who work hard and do what they have to in order to perform."
Middle Tennessee registered 10 team points and tied UTEP, Ole Miss, Kent State, Auburn, Mississippi State and Long Beach State for 24th in team score. Rutto registered the first four points for MT after finishing fifth in the 800-meter Friday, while Golden's third-place netted an additional six points.
