IRVING, Texas - Middle Tennessee women's basketball senior Laken Leonard was one of 15 Conference USA student-athletes selected for the 2014 Jim Castañeda scholarship, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Conference USA annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.

This is the sixth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.

Leonard graduated from MT in May with a degree in biochemistry, holding a 3.75 GPA. She is set to attend Belmont University's College of Pharmacy in August.

The Whitleyville, Tennessee, native is the 2014 recipient of the President's Award, which is the most prestigious honor given to a MT student. The winner must exemplify superior character and honor and have made achievements that, ideally, all students should strive to meet. The undergraduate student will have completed at least 90 credit hours, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be recognized as a campus leader and have made significant contributions to the university community.

She was among 16 Conference USA athletes to earn Winter C-USA Spirit of Service honors for not only her on-court and academic achievements, but also for involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Greenhouse Ministries, Special Olympics and more.

Leonard played in all 34 games, starting in 16, for the 29-5 Conference USA regular season and tournament champion Blue Raiders. She averaged 6.7 points per game and won a conference title in all four seasons as a student-athlete.
