Blue Raiders Remain Perfect in 4-3 Win

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The 21st-ranked Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders dropped the doubles point for only the second time this season but won the opening four singles matches and went on to defeat Memphis, 4-3, in men's tennis action Saturday at the Racquet Club.

The Blue Raiders ran their record to 8-0 on the season, their best start since beginning the 1997 campaign 12-0.

The visiting Tigers opened the match with a strong performance, winning the doubles point. Middle Tennessee's fifth-ranked tandem of Oliver Foreman and Robert Gustafsson dropped a 9-8 (3) decision to Ben Stapp and Lee Taylor Walker at No. 1.

The 47th-ranked duo of Daniel Klemetz and Kirk Jackson kept the home team in the match with an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Michael Chamberlain and Richard Magney, but Memphis took the doubles point with an 8-4 victory at No. 3, with Alex Bucewicz and Michael La Haie defeating MT's Trevor Short and Greg Pollack.

The Blue Raiders dominated singles action to take the match victory, winning the first four matches to win the dual match.

Klemetz, ranked 15th, won 6-2, 7-6 (2) over Magney at No. 1, and 40th-rated Gustafsson taking a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 decision over Stapp. At No. 3, 97th-ranked Foreman won 6-3, 6-4 against Bucewicz, while Michael Staniak won by the same score over Walker to seal the match victory for the Blue Raiders.

The Tigers won the final two singles matches, with Chamberlain defeating Jackson, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-4, and La Haie taking care of Short, 6-3, 6-4.

The Blue Raiders host 54th-ranked Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. Monday in a match originally scheduled for the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. Weather will dictate whether the match moves to the Racquet Club.
