Lady Raiders Split with Lipscomb in First MeetingMarch 5, 2002 · MT Media Relations
Junior Hurler Stayc Preator (1-4) had another tough outing on the mound as she gave up a homerun in the top of the third to put the Lady Bisons on the board first 1-0. Lipscomb got its second run in the top of the fifth when Ashley Denton scored from second on an error.
Middle Tennessee spoiled a shut out when right fielder Laura Brockman doubled and then scored on a wild pitch and error on catcher Denton. The Lady Raiders couldn't push another run around to tie the game, as three straight hits went to the third baseman for routine plays.
It was a different story in the second game of the double header, as hurler Jennifer Martinez picked up her sixth win of the season and also helped herself at the plate. The senior pitched a two hit shutout and recorded eight strikeouts.
Martinez was also the first Lady Raider to put runs on the board for Middle Tennessee in the second game. In the bottom of the first she hit her third homerun of the season, which sent home second baseman Lisa Sherman. Her dinger over the right field fence puts her at five homeruns for her career and ties her in the career record books with teammate Ashlie Way.
In the bottom of the third, Middle Tennessee got its third run on a homerun shot by third baseman Kristina Hieb. It is the first homerun of the season for Hieb and the first time this season the Lady Raiders have hit two homeruns in a game.
The double header with Lipscomb was the first home games for the Lady Raiders this season. On Friday, Middle Tennessee will begin a three-day tournament at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, FL.
