MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee track athletes Godfrey Herring and Mardy Scales both qualified for event finals with excellent preliminary times Friday in the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Ark.

Scales qualified for the 60m finals with a mark of 6.65 in Friday's preliminaries, the seventh fastest time of the day. The sophomore did not qualify for Saturday's 200m final, running 21.56 in the preliminaries Friday night.

Herring, looking for his third consecutive indoor All-American honor, qualified for Saturday's 400m final with a mark of 46.41. The senior earned All-America honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons last year in the 400m and is currently a three-time All-American.

A total of 270 participants will compete in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event by the NCAA.

The Middle Tennessee track squads open the outdoor season on March 16 at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
