Lady Raiders Split with UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Middle Tennessee softball (17-16) split with UAB (23-12) on Tuesday, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the second game 1-0 at George Ward Park.

The Lady Raiders lost the second game of the double header when a Middle Tennessee error sent home second baseman Kim Mullins. Junior pitcher Stayc Preator picked up the loss on the mound and falls to 4-7. She had four strikeouts and an no earned runs in the game.

In game one, Middle Tennessee defeated UAB in an eight-inning game 4-3. Freshman Dani DeCamino hit the game winner when her single sent home right fielder Jen Polsteen. Middle Tennessee was cruising in the top of the seventh, sitting on a 3-1 lead, when UAB put together two runs on two hits with the help of two Middle Tennessee errors to send the game into extra innings.

The Lady Raiders scored three runs to start the game. Junior centerfielder Kip Phillips started Middle Tennessee off with a single and advanced to second on a UAB error. After a single by Lisa Sherman sent Phillips to third, and a pitch hit Leah Grouthause, Lindsay Azevedo hit a sacrifice fly to send in Phillips. Jennifer Martinez picked up two RBI with a rip to right field, sending home Sherman and Grouthause.

UAB picked up one run in the bottom of the first inning. Candice Hithe was hit by a Martinez pitch and after stealing second and third, she was sent home by a sacrifice fly by Kia Paul.

Martinez got the win on the mound and improves to 12-5 for the season. She had 11 strikeouts in the game, allowing two hits and one earned run.

Middle Tennessee will begin Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday April 6, when the Lady Raiders travel to Miami, FL to take on Florida International. Double-header action begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
