MT Drops 2-0 Decision to Memphis

April 3, 2002 · MT Media Relations
Middle Tennessee (18-10) saw its longest losing streak of the year extended to four games as the Blue Raiders fell to visiting Memphis (10-14) 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers got an outstanding pitching performance from starter Daniel de Armas, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. De Armas hurled 7-1/3 innings until yielding to the bullpen. Josh Cartwright and Josh Payne finished the game without allowing a hit or a run.

The Tigers got all they needed offensively in the top of the first inning. Paul Cookman led off with a solid single up the middle and Paul Reuer followed by getting hit by a Swing breaking ball. The freshman rallied to get the next two hitters, but a single from designated hitter Barrett Smith plated Cookman and put runners at first and second. However, Swing got a strikeout to end the inning and quell the threat.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a homer from Brent Dlugach.

The Blue Raiders finally broke through against de Armas in the sixth with a Chad Cooper base hit. Nate Jaggers would be the only other Blue Raider to get a hit when he doubled in the next frame.

De Armas earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the year while Swing fell to 0-2.

The Blue Raiders will return to Sun Belt action on Friday against New Mexico State with a 7:05 PM start. The series will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
