Blue Raiders fall in DISH Tennesse Classic finale

MT turns attention to Saint Mary's Tournament
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Despite dropping the final match of the DISH Tennessee Classic to Tennessee 3-0, first-year head coach has Dan Ahiers learned a lot about his team early in the season.
"It doesn't matter the score – they come to play every single point," Ahiers said. "We were down some sets by 8-plus, but they wanted to earn every single point. It was great to see that, especially on a team with new pieces. It's great to see no matter what we do, they still work together as a team."
Sophomore Vonnie Covington paced MT with six kills against the Vols, while Aubrie Huddleston and Regan Coughlin each had four. Huddleston and Meg Irvin also turned in a team-high six digs.
Sophomore Bailey Mason, who tallied 26 kills, 16 digs and six total blocks on the weekend, was tabbed to the All-Tournament team.
Much like the day's first match against Cincinnati, MT brought energy right out of the gate.
Middle Tennessee attacked the Vols early behind a kill and an ace by Huddleston to help build a 11-9 lead in the first set. The Vols, however, answered with an 11-3 run and capitalized on Raider errors to claim the first set 25-17.
An ace by Jacqueline Lux followed by kills by Huddleston and Covington gave MT an early 4-0 lead in the second set. But Tennessee would answer for the second time on the day, this time using a 15-5 run to provide a 17-11 lead. Trailing 20-12, MT began a rally to inch closer at 21-16, but UT's Erica Treiber used a pair of kills to put the set out of reach and give the Vols a 25-18 win.
The Volunteers used that momentum in set three, establishing a 9-1 lead. Kills by Regan Coughlin and Makila York, along with a pair of Vol errors, momentarily closed the margin before a 14-4 run gave Tennessee a 25-12 set win and clinched the match for the Vols.
"It was great for our team to go up against an experienced team like Tennessee so they can see what we want to be. They can see how a good offensive team looks," Ahiers said. "I think we played better defense tonight. We scrambled a lot more than they did. We did a lot of the things we wanted to accomplish. We were right there in the match and had leads in the first and second set. It was good for us to see what we can become."
The Blue Raiders will turn their attention toward Moraga, California and the Saint Mary's Invitational. MT will open the tournament Friday against Nevada at 3 p.m. CT before facing host Saint Mary's at 2 p.m. CT and UC Riverside at 8 p.m. CT on Saturday.
