2007: Started the season opener at guard against FAU but played just 24 snaps before reinjuring his neck ... Prior to the FIU game, Bortner was told by doctors that he would have to give up football in order to not risk serious injury.

2006: Saw action in 12 games with the bulk of his snaps coming on special teams ... Had 10 total knockdowns for the season ... Was in on four plays as backup at guard in season-opener against FIU and had one knockdown ... Saw 25 snaps at Maryland and came back to compete in 18 in victory over Tennessee Tech and registered a season-best four knockdowns ... Had a season-high 26 plays at Oklahoma (grade of 74 percent) followed by 11 in win over North Texas and 17 against Louisville ... Earned a grade of 77 percent against the Cardinals ... Played 12 plays in the win at Louisiana-Monroe and six each against Louisiana-Lafayette and FAU ... Was in on 14 plays at South Carolina.

2005: Competed in all 11 games and started the last six ... Was fifth among linemen with 497 total snaps played while collecting 73.5 knockdowns ... Had a cumulative season grade of 77 percent ... Played 26 snaps, collected 5.5 knockdowns and graded out at 71 percent against North Texas ... Saw action in 17 snaps versus Akron ... Had 47 snaps and collected 11.5 knockdowns in win over FAU ... Played 54 snaps and earned a grade of 81 percent in loss to ULL ... Earned his second straight start and was in on 65 snaps in win over Arkansas State ... Also had 10.5 knockdowns against the Indians to go along with a grade of 77 percent ... Played 71 snaps and registered 9.5 knockdowns against Louisiana-Monroe (also earned a grade of 79 percent) ... Graded out at 80 percent and was tabbed the team's most valuable lineman following the NC State game ... Was in on 62 snaps and had a grade of 81 percent in the win over Troy ... Played a season-high 81 snaps at FIU to go with 10 knockdowns and a grade of 82 percent.

2004: Took a redshirt year.

High School: Originally was committed to Kentucky ... A three-year letterman and starter at Crestview ... Named first team all-area as a senior ... Earned honorable mention all-area honors as a junior when team won state title and finished with a 13-1 mark ... Was the only junior on the offensive line that year ... Also competed in weightlifting and track (made regionals in discus throw).
