with four each coming from Tennessee, Georgia, and California, three
from Florida, two from Alabama, and one each from Colorado, Louisiana, and South Carolina. Overall, 13 signees come from the high school ranks.

Tossed a career best four touchdown passes in a win over South Florida ... Also registered 226 passing yards against the Bulls ... Completed 17 of 21 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown ... Rushed for a personal best 50 yards on eight attempts at UAB ... Was voted the team's skill player of the week following wins over Connecticut and South Florida ... Punted five times (two downed inside 20-yard line) for an average of 32.2, but nailed a personal long 42 yarder at Illinois.

1999: Had perhaps the best statistical season of any quarterback in school history ... Set five new single-game records and six single-season marks ... Collected three 300-yard passing games, including a school record 362 against Wofford ... Registered 347 yards at Louisiana-Lafayette and 331 against Troy State ... Threw for 200 or more yards six times ... Also set the school mark with 29 completions against UCF and Louisiana Tech ... Completed 63.8 percent of his passes, which was the second best total in school history ... Passed for a school record 2,603 yards to go along with 14 touchdowns ... Had a season long pass of 58 yards at UL Lafayette ... Was a game captain against Wofford and UL Lafayette.

1998: Was listed third team entering the season opener vs TSU and by game's end was No. 1 ... Enjoyed the second best season in school history by a freshman quarterback ... Threw for 1,541 yards, which was the best single-season effort by an MT freshman since Kelly Holcomb had 1,763 yards in 1991 ... Set a new single-season accuracy mark by completing 67.0 percent of his passes ... Ended the year ranked 16th nationally in pass efficiency and the No. 1 freshman ... Threw just two interceptions in 212 pass attempts ... Completed a personal best 24 passes in 32 attempts for a freshman record 314 yards in the win over SEMO (was ninth 300-yard passing game in MT history) ... Tallied a career long 77-yard TD pass vs SEMO ... Named OVC Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 1 and earned OVC Newcomer of the Week honors on Sept. 27 ... Tossed a career-high three touchdown passes against Eastern Kentucky ... Had at least one TD pass in six of the last seven games of the year ... Registered 200 or more yards passing in three games.

1997: Took a redshirt year.

High School: Played for coach Rick Butler at Oakland High School ... Set Oakland career records in passing attempts, completions and yardage ... Played on the Tennessee All-Star squad ... Was two-time all-region, three-time all-county and three-time AP Offensive Player of the Week ... With playoff berth on the line, Counts threw for 211 yards, ran for 62 more and tossed three TD passes in win over Coffee County.
