Highest finish for a Blue Raider since 2010
EUGENE, Ore. – John Ampomah finished an exciting 2015 campaign with a second-place finish in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
"John competed and had to battle against the defending NCAA Champion (Sam) Crouser at home," said head coach Dean Hayes. "He competed and got the third-best throw of his career. He did a really good job and we are proud of him."
Ampomah battled with Oregon senior Sam Crouser and Mississippi State freshman Curtis Thompson through six rounds.
After taking the lead with his 74.71-meter throw, Ampomah held the top spot until Crouser landed a 78.15-meter toss in round three. Thompson then would edge Ampomah with his fourth throw (75.42) before the Accra, Ghana native landed his 77.13-meter toss (253'), which landed him second.
Ampomah's finish is the highest for a Blue Raider since Stanley Gbagbeke in the men's long jump and Sarah Nambawa in the women's triple jump both finished second at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
Atsu Nyamadi also competed in five of the ten events in the decathlon Wednesday.
Nyamadi started the day with a 19th-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.20 seconds), and followed it with his 7.19-meter leap (23' 7.25") in the long jump. He earned his highest finish in the shot put, placing seventh with a toss of 13.52 meters (44' 4.25").
In the final two events, Nyamadi cleared 1.96 meters (6' 5") in the high jump and raced to 17th in the 400 meter (50.90).
Nyamadi continues competition for Middle Tennessee tomorrow at the NCAA Championships with the final five events of the decathlon.
